A statistical study of ionospheric profile parameters derived from Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar measurements

چکیده
[1] Diurnal, seasonal, and solar activity variations of the bottomside electron density profile parameters B0 and B1, representing the F2 layer thickness and shape, are studied using a large incoherent scatter radar dataset for Millstone Hill covering the period 1976–2002. These results are compared with the latest IRI model. Our statistical study is characterized by morning and afternoon falls in the diurnal variation of B0 for seasons other than summer and a 15% change in B1 over a solar cycle, features not fully well represented by the standard IRI model. The standard IRI B1, however, is very close to observations in terms of the diurnal variation.

Variations of electron density based on long-term incoherent scatter radar and ionosonde measurements over Millstone Hill
[1] Measurements from the incoherent scatter radar (ISR) and ionosonde over Millstone Hill (42.6 N, 288.5 E) are analyzed to explore ionospheric temporal variations. The F2 layer peak density NmF2, peak height hmF2, and scale height H are derived from a Chapman a layer fitting to observed ISR electron density profiles. Diurnal, seasonal, and solar activity variations of the ionospheric characte...
متن کاملSolar EUV flux, exospheric temperature and thermospheric wind inferred from incoherent scatter measurements of the electron density profile at Millstone Hill and Shigaraki
[1] We explore a method for inferring solar EUV flux, atmospheric composition and wind using ionospheric electron density Ne profile measurements. Incoherent scatter radar data from Millstone Hill and Shigaraki measured on October 5, 1989 are assimilated into a theoretical model whose driving forces, solar EUV flux, exosphere temperature Tex, and meridional wind, are adjustable. Adjustments are...
متن کاملVariations of topside ionospheric scale heights over Millstone Hill during the 30-day incoherent scatter radar experiment
A 30-day incoherent scatter radar (ISR) experiment was conducted at Millstone Hill (288.5 E, 42.6 N) from 4 October to 4 November 2002. The altitude profiles of electron density Ne, ion and electron temperature (Ti and Te), and line-of-sight velocity during this experiment were processed to deduce the topside plasma scale height Hp, vertical scale height VSH, Chapman scale height Hm, ion veloci...
متن کاملIonospheric plasma temperatures during 1976 – 2001 over Millstone Hill
Incoherent scatter measurements have been made since the 1960s over Millstone Hill. Zenith antenna data since 1976 and steerable antenna data since 1980 are now available through the WWW-based Madrigal database system. By analyzing this large volume of data in a systematic way, this paper provides an updated climatology of the ionospheric temperature over Millstone Hill, including diurnal varia...
متن کاملIonospheric climatology and variability from long-term and multiple incoherent scatter radar observations: variability
Long-term incoherent scatter radar (ISR) observations are used to study ionospheric variability for two midlatitude sites, Millstone Hill and St. Santin. This work is based on our prior efforts which resulted in an empirical model system, ISR Ionospheric Model (ISRIM), of climatology (and now variability) of the ionosphere. We assume that the variability can be expressed in three terms, the bac...
